  Respirator Medical Evaluation

Industrial Health provides on-site testing of employees and medical evaluation of results by a physician to determine the ability of an employee to wear a respirator safely.  The tests include a medical history, pulse rate, blood pressure and pulmonary (lung) function test.

Wearing a respirator increases the work of the heart and lungs.  Especially in strenuous activities such as fire fighting, this can result in bodily harm and even death.  Respirator medical evaluation testing is a protocol designed to determine the medical status of the employee and to determine the employee's ability to use a respirator safely.

OSHA regulation 1910.134 Respiratory Protection, requires medical evaluation and approval for all employees using respirators.  Industrial Health is a leading provider of on-site respirator medical evaluation testing to meet the requirement and ensure the health and safety of your employees.

All test results are sent to our headquarters in Palo Alto, CA for review based on criteria established by our medical director.  If the results are within the evaluation criteria established, the employee is approved.  For those employees whose test results don't meet the criteria for safe respirator use, a referral is made for further medical evaluation by a local physician.

Industrial Health can screen and approve the majority of employees greatly saving on the cost of 100% hands on examinations by a physician.  Those employees whose test results leave any doubt that the employee can safely wear a respirator will not be approved.  They will be referred for further evaluation which should be done by physician experienced in respirator use evaluation.

For the employee, a letter signed by a physician is issued.  The letter either approves the employee to wear a respirator or refers the employee for further medical evaluation.

For the employer, in addition to individual letters, a summary report is provided which lists all employees tested and their approval status.
